Youku and Tudou merge to become China’s biggest video streaming site

Get your Chinese drama fix here!

Today, Chinese video streaming giants Youku and Tudou announced that they will be merging making them the single largest streaming company in China. Combined, the new company Youku Tudou Inc, will boast some 283 million subscribers and will be able to share content across both sites.

Although the companies will exist as separate entities online, the newly merged video giant will be able to share cost of operations – namely the bandwidth costs associated with their services. Unlike their American counterpart , YouTube, Youku and Tudou do not rely on user submitted content and instead licenses properties from television and film studios. For Youku and Tudou’s competitors, it’s pretty safe to say they’ll be priced out of the market shortly. Long live open Chinese markets right?
