A Street Icon Reborn – the Leica Q3

Standard

Today, Leica announced the next generation Q-series camera – the Leica Q3. I often shy away from hyperbolic announcements but based on what we know so far, this is a major update to one of the most iconic street photography cameras available today. Here’s what a land yacht of a camera buys you.

Leica Q3 Tech Specs via Leica

  • 60-megapixel BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Maestro Series processor
  • Leica Summilux 28mm f/1.7 ASPH (fixed) lens
  • 8K video (cropped)/ Full-HD (full sensor) capable
  • 5.76-million-pixel OLED EVF
  • 3-inch tiltable touchscreen

Cutting the Noise – Leica Q3

I was not lying earlier when I called the Leica Q3 the land yacht of the camera world. But to be very transparent, the Q3 is a roadster and not a touring sedan – in other words, it is built for fun prestige. For most enthusiasts, the Leica mark is as aspirational as it gets. But beyond its looks and history, the Q3 does offer a major upgrade from the Q2 with the high-resolution 60-megapixel sensor and the addition of the flip-out screen. While the camera does shoot 8K video, without a dedicated mic jack, you won’t be using this as an A-camera (though I’m sure the B-roll will be sick!).

Beyond the internal upgrades, the Q-series Leica continues to be one of the sleekest cameras you can buy; one that I think looks better than the M series. All of the attention to detail in construction can be found in the Q3 including the 28mm Summilux lens and the IP52-rated dust/weather resistance.

This is a camera you purchase for a lifetime.

Pricing and Availability

The Leica Q3 is a premium camera in every sense of the word and naturally comes at a premium price. Leica has already begun taking orders for the Q3 and if you’ve got an extra $5950, you can purchase one here.
